Guides
Does the app say offline, is a code flashing, or is this year’s total lower than last year’s? Each guide tells you what to check first, what it usually is, and what waiting costs you.
Something looks wrong
-
Solar inverter offline, or not producing? How to tell
- Inverter & errors
Offline in the app is not the same as not producing. This guide separates a communication fault from a production fault from one dead string, with a concrete test for each, per-brand instructions for reading the inverter itself, and what a silent week costs.
-
Solar panels producing less than expected: less than what, exactly?
- Production
Producing less is not the same as broken. Three comparisons you can run today, the causes in order of likelihood, and what your brand app will and will not warn you about.
-
How do I know if my solar panels are working? Four checks, and what none of them tell you
- Production
Four checks, easiest first: inverter display, brand app, meter at midday, multimeter. What each one cannot tell you, what to look for on SolarEdge, Enphase and Growatt, and which other apps do what.
-
Solar panel health check you can do yourself in 15 minutes
- Production
Six checks you can run yourself in about a quarter of an hour, in the order that finds faults fastest: is it producing now, does last month match the weather, who gets the alerts, any code or red light, how old the kit is and what is still under warranty. Plus the one loss this check will not find.
-
Enphase "microinverter not reporting": one panel, some panels, or all of them?
- Inverter & errors
One black panel, a few, or all of them? If every panel went black at once, check the gateway first: production can carry on while it is offline. What the four IQ Gateway LEDs mean, the usual causes, and when Enphase actually notifies you.
-
Expected solar output calculator: how to check your solar production against the weather
- Production
Your app knows how many kWh you made, not what the weather allowed. How to get that second number for your own roof from PVGIS, check a month against it, and what your brand app compares your output against.
-
Growatt datalogger red light: flashing red is not a fault
- Inverter & errors

In Growatt's own ShineWiFi-X manual, a flashing red datalogger LED means the stick has successfully connected to the inverter. The state that signals failure is solid green. The inverter's own LED works the other way round: on the MIN TL-XH, solid green is normal and solid red is a fault.
-
Growatt PV Isolation Low: error 203, 125 and relay fault 117
- Inverter & errors

PV Isolation Low is code 203 on the MIN family, 125 on the 30-50K TL3-S, and unnumbered on SPH hybrids. Warning 203 is a different fault from Error 203, error 117 is a relay fault rather than a battery fault, and a flashing red datalogger LED means the logger is working.
-
SolarEdge error codes: 18xB5, 18xB7 and 18xBC explained
- Inverter & errors
18xB5, 18xB7 and 18xBC all carry the same official action: contact support, RMA related. What they mean and what to do next, the rest of SolarEdge's January 2026 code list, what S_OK and P_OK on the display tell you, and which codes in circulation do not exist.
-
Who actually gets your solar alerts? A 10-minute audit for SolarEdge, Enphase and Growatt owners
- Monitoring & alerts

SolarEdge, Enphase and Growatt all built their alerting for installers. This audit shows, per brand, where the alert settings live, what the documented thresholds are, whose inbox the messages go to, and how to get owner access when the installer holds the account.

Super El Niño winter solar panels: underperforming, or just the weather?
- Weather & outages
El Niño years can raise the risk of a colder UK winter, but colder is not darker. How to tell a dark December from a dead string, with your own figures.
-
Your solar panel company has gone bust: who's watching your system now?
- Monitoring & alerts
When a solar installer goes out of business the monitoring goes quiet before anything else does. What survives, what does not, and how to get owner access to a SolarEdge, Enphase or Growatt account that a dead email address owns.
-
Solar panels after a storm, hail or lightning: what to check, what you can't see, and what your own figures show
- Weather & outages
The garden and the app both look normal after a storm, hail or lightning strike — a dead string or optimiser doesn't stop the rest of the system from reporting. What to check from the ground, what hail and UK surge rules actually promise, what a home insurance claim needs, and how your own figures show what happened.
-
Solar panels in a power cut: why they stop and what to check
- Weather & outages
A grid-tied inverter switches off in a power cut by design and is meant to reconnect on its own once the grid returns — but it can restart while one string or microinverter stays dark, and neither the app nor a green light will show you that. Your own production history will.
-
Solar panels off for roof work: what to agree, what to check
- Roof & house
Panels come off for a roof job and go back on. The failure that matters — a string unplugged, an optimiser not re-paired, a connector not fully seated — does not necessarily trip an error. What to agree before the work, what re-commissioning should include, and how to check your own production afterwards.
-
Bought a house with solar panels? What you have inherited, whose name the monitoring is in, and the first thing to check
- Roof & house
You did not choose this system and nobody handed you a manual. What you have inherited, who to tell that the house has changed hands, why the monitoring account is still in the installer's or the previous owner's name, and the first check that tells you whether the panels are working at all.
Upkeep and upgrades
-
A heat pump and solar panels: what the roof covers in winter, what it does not, and how to read your own numbers
- Battery & heat pump
Solar peaks in summer, heating peaks in winter. What a roof makes month by month in London and Dublin, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme amounts and deadlines, how a heat pump does on the coldest days, and how to size it from your own production history.
-
Do solar panels need cleaning? Usually not, and when it pays
- Roof & house
Most tilted roofs are washed by rain, and dirt costs less than the internet suggests. What rain leaves behind, what a clean costs, how to clean without voiding the warranty, and how to settle it from your own daily kWh.
-
Home battery for solar panels: whether it pays, what size
- Battery & heat pump
A home battery stores the surplus your panels would otherwise export. Whether that is worth doing depends on the gap between what you pay to import and what your supplier pays you to export — and on figures you already have: your own daily production and your own metered export.
-
Snow on your solar panels: leave it or clear it, what a snow day costs, and how to tell snow from a fault
- Weather & outages
Snow on the glass means very little output until it slides off. Whether to clear it is a working-at-height question first, and a covered December day is worth a few kilowatt-hours. A zero day with snow on the ground is normal; a zero day without snow is not.
